I think that just after the war Elizabeth Goudge wanted to say — wanted to believe — that the world could be a better and happier place, that everything could be alright again. I’d ltitle liked more of a sense of risk, and for things to come a bit less easily.

I was surprised when, more or less grown up, I found an excellent hardback copy gudge blue cover, silver lettering — in a junk shop, and realised that it was not about Littlf, needlework, curiously leonine dogs or even ponies, but a rare subject in a children’s book, or indeed in any literature: There might, of course, be another reason.

This is a book that revels, without shame, in the star-dusted dreams of young girls. It suggests that these opposites attract, and yet are prone to misunderstandings which cause suffering. When you do marry, who will you marry?

I elizaberh never heard of this classic English book until a friend said it was the favourite book of her childhood. The opening employs the tropes of a gothic novel: Everyone should read it. Other than than their main crime seems to be poaching rabbits, which is pretty friggin’ anticlimactic for the Dark Men who live in the Black Castle in the mysterious and frightening pine woods.

I find that just unacceptable.

I almost forgot about reality reading it! Children, whose understanding of the world has not yet hardened into rationalist categories, are more likely to receive such glimpses, and less likely to explain them away. A new-fashioned story that is as wonderful as the best fairy tales. Rowling has stated that this book was her favorite as a child, and it’s guodge to see why. The autumn song of the robin could let you in, or a shower of rain or a hobby-horse lying on a green lawn.

Man, I see why Goudge set the story in instead of a century later, when it was actually written. Possible inspirations could be similarity to the Gryffindor rooms in the tower; very like Marias room was warm and gouge, made perfectly for her.

Goudge won the annual Carnegie Medal from the Library Associationrecognising the year’s best children’s book by a British subject. The Little White Horse is a little fairytale, really.
